Hello! This is Facelifted Gaming, the blog dedicated to modernization of vintage video games - primarily PC ones.
A few years back, the author occasionally ran into the story about AI-upscaled textures in the antique game called ‘Heretic’ that used to be my favourite back in 1990s and 2000s.
Fascinated, I started digging further and eventually, in 2022, started a dedicated blog on Instagram, covering the Herculean efforts of the modding scene towards bringing the the titles as old as Alley Cat from 1983/84 to enjoyment of the modern gamers…
…or pushing the old tech far beyond what seemed to be possible…
…Ah, and have you seen them Frazetting the ol’ good Skyrim?
It’s insane what people with technical and artistic skills, determination, and love for the vintage games can do using the cutting-edge tech of today.
Occasionally it’s indeed just facelifts.
Sometimes - groundbreaking, mindboggling alteration, leaving you in a total awe:
So, here are a few highlights from almost two years of Facelifted Gaming. Check out how them enthusiasts:
Brought PBR materials to Heretic, Hexen and Doom games;
Returned classic Diablo to modern system with an HD Mod that also restores quite a lot of cut content;
Renovated the classic Dune II - DosBox’s no longer needed;
Transformed Princess of Persia from a damsel in distress into a wrathful amazon out to cut down Jaffar herself;
Made Oblivion a place for sightseeing again…
…And Skyrim, of course, too.
So, let us re-discover the magic of bygone gaming eras, with the old tech being reinforced with the newest one, but primarily - with humans’ ingenuity, enthusiasm and - to a lesser degree - nostalgia.
